About Us

At Wishing Stone Farm our growing methods mirror our commitment to sustainable agriculture and the protection of open space, while providing food for our local communities. We started our farm in 1983 and this year (2023) marks our 40th year farming in Little Compton! Together we adapt to weather conditions, farming trends, and community interest.

Our farm is located in Little Compton along the southeastern coast of Rhode Island. All totaled we farm about 40 acres around town, with over 15 greenhouse structures, a packing barn, a commercial kitchen and a retail market space. Much of the land is made possible from conservation practices set up by the Nature Conservancy, Sakonnet Preservation Association and the Little Compton Agricultural Agency, along with other private land owners. We welcome the public to swing by the farm and our other markets in Providence to pick up vegetables, eggs, prepared food items and much more!

Back at @hopestreetmarket tomorrow! And every Saturday 9-1!!! We are getting close to opening down in LC but still have a few building projects to finish up and we think you will all be excited to see the new changes to the farm store! Hopefully we will be open for business June 3rd!

As you all might have heard… New England peach orchards took a big hit last winter when the temperature dropped down well below 0 degrees… spring buds were just starting to emerge when this happened and from buds come flowers and from flowers come peaches… we thought we might have escaped this as Little Compton has a very strange micro climate but we are looking at about 25% survival rate… many other farms got it much worse. The trees themselves are fine and there is always next year… farming is a gamble and in the end it is always up to Mother Nature…

We are back outside at the Hope Street Market! @hopestreetmarket we are so happy to get some fresh air! Some new things like jumbo spring onions and carrot bunches! Come say hi and check all the new vendors ❤️

Chickens are back in town! Big thanks to @patspastured for hosting the pullet pick up this year… Ended up being a late night. With the Bird flu protocols and lack of staff down in Pennsylvania we were uncertain if we were going to get any laying hens this year but luckily the chicken truck came screwing into East Greenwich last night around 8:45! The driver did some very some fancy maneuvering in the dark and all the farmers left happy if not a little tired. We got back to LC around 11 and they are happy and safe in their new home in Little Compton! We should start seeing eggs coming in a few weeks hopefully 🤞

We have some tulips and bags of salad mix/spinach for sale! We are using Venmo so swing by and grab some stuff if you are in the neighborhood ❤️ our honor market will not be open for preseason sales because … we really don’t have much to sell! Fall is crazy and by the time we close every year at the end of October we still have sooo many things to sell so it makes since…Spring time is for planting and transitioning greenhouses to summer crops so the variety of things to offer becomes very limited…. Anyway, come down and grab some flowers and some greens for dinner! Cheers 🥂

Greetings from the Farm… Happy to report Spring planting feels on target this year. The winter months flew by for us and fortunately presented mild weather with very little drama. Now we are closing in on our target date to re-open the home market in early June. The Hope Street Market in Providence starts on May 6th in Lippitt Park. It did feel very odd to have such an empty mailbox in February. Getting a production loan from Farm Credit does not carry the warm fuzzy feeling we got from receiving support from our past CSA Members. However, change is inevitable, and we are getting used to it. Speaking of change, we are creating a new and improved market room with a bit more space and additional coolers. Wilma's Kitchen will be back this season to help round out our offerings with her tasty pies, quiches and other treats. We do not want to jinx our luck but there is a strong possibility that a very talented chef from Providence may be creating some other magic here as well. More later on that news! When you run a seasonal business you can never predict who will be available from year to year. This season looks great so far although we could use more field help from adults who will stay on through October. Growing food for people can be very satisfying. This is our 40th year farming at Wishing Stone and we sure wish we had kept a journal of all the people that have helped us run this farm through the years. It seems like a year to reflect on our history and we have been remembering fond old stories. Hopefully many more to come!

Happy Birthday Liz!!

We got our first few rows down yesterday just in time for some rain to lock it down… big thanks to our crew for the hustle to get this done as early as possible. It’s always a struggle this time of year to get land ready after a wet winter… you can seed early stuff all you want but if you can’t get in the field there is no point…this area will be for early green sprouted potatoes and maybe some chard or other random things we can cover and keep happy. Happy spring y’all ….

Can’t believe this is the last bin of onions! All year after harvest season it is a race to sell crops while they still look good. It’s always a balance between selling them to fast or to slow. We are officially sold out of butternut after harvesting 50 bins of it this year! Potatoes are down to the last few bins of each variety and stuff like carrots, beets, turnips and radishes are down to fighting weight. Thanks to everyone who supports us….we have been busy seeding like crazy for this upcoming season and we can’t wait to get into it with all of you ❤️

Let the grafting begin…

We are starting to look for employees for the 2023 season! We are looking for seasonal employees and long term manager positions if interested! As a member of a small farm crew in beautiful Little Compton, you might be most interested in the farming operations of the greenhouses, fields and pack house. Maybe you would rather turn some of that delicious produce into treats in our commercial kitchen? There is also room for helping at our markets if that is more your style? We have openings in all areas and being a small farm allows everyone the chance to get to know each other and learn a bit about all the areas of our farm. Pay is based on experience and ability to learn quickly. We are looking forward to another fun and productive season! Our CSA, (Community Supported Agriculture Program) started in 1994, and was modified to many formats over the years! Many of you have been with us since the very beginning and we will always be grateful for your support! However this year we have decided to end the program. It was a wonderful vehicle for growth, and a great way to meet new folks and encourage them to trust in us. Now we are looking to simplify a bit, and this seems like a step in the right direction. We will continue to have open markets at the Home Farm in Little Compton on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, 10-5 starting in early June. We will also return to Lippitt Park for The Hope Street Market in Providence Saturday mornings 9-1 May through October. The only thing missing will be the CSA Cards, but you can still use cash, credit, debit or our own Gift Cards. I am already dreaming about tomatoes, but never fear the seeds are being planted for our early crop this week!

We are officially closed! Thanks so much for making our post season honor system a success!!! We aren’t set up for winter conditions so for now we will be closing the market. No market in Providence this weekend but we will be back next weekend and through the spring @farmfreshri Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Open today for honor system sales! Thanks for a great day yesterday ❤️ we will continue to be open every day until it becomes to nasty and wintery to stay open . But for now we will keep everything stocked and available to you as best we can 🫡

Carrot Harvest went much better than expected this week after a hot summer/dry summer and bad germination the carrots that survived are enormous and super tasty! We are gearing up for our @farmfreshri market this Saturday 9-1 with tons of Thanksgiving veggies. We also will have our annual Thanksgiving Market at the farm with @sweetandsaltyfarm 11/22 the Tuesday before Thanksgiving!

Honor System Market is a go! Stop by everyday for self check out veggies! We will be open through the Holidays and everyday for now until we figure this thing out 😉 we have mostly farm veggies with a few off farm things like apples that we have left over from last weeks market. Small selection of stuff from @therustyleek like frozen soups and pesto. We have been wanting to do this for awhile and we are excited to see how it will work … we except Venmo, cash and checks . ❤️❤️❤️

Last Market Day of the Season! Thank you all so much for an awesome year ❤️ This is your last chance to use up your CSA cards for this year… If you still have a lot of money left over come down to LC today and use it up! It’s pretty easy with all the extras the market in Little Compton has to offer ( prepared foods, dips and soups from @therustyleek , pies and quiche from Wilma, meats, cheese, snacks, honey and plus the return of BRUSSELS!) we will close today for the year but next week we will try something new and open a small honor system farm stand at the farm. We will probably keep that open at least through the Holidays and we will also host our annual Thanksgiving Market along with @sweetandsaltyfarm the Tuesday before Thanksgiving…

Cabbage Season has started. Gunma Cabbage has a large diameter, exaggerated flat heads produce thin, flexible leaves with a mild flavor. Great for stuffing and salads! This type of cabbage is preferred by some Asian markets and is fabulous for making whole sour head fermented cabbage. It is crispy and tender. Also it’s bigger than a human skull 💀
